TIE: your card filing checklist
Use this for the physical TIE step once you have the visa, residence/stay authorization or favorable decision that supports your card. The TIE documents an existing legal status; it does not create that status by itself.
Procedure
Solicitud de Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) — form EX-17 for the card-issuance step. Confirm that your underlying authorization or status is already in place.
Where to go
The TIE application is handled in person through the competent Oficina de Extranjería or Policía Nacional office for the procedure. Follow the office shown for your province and appointment.
What to select
In the appointment system, choose the TIE / fingerprinting (toma de huellas) option offered for your card type and province. Do not select NIE assignment or EU-citizen registration instead; wording can differ between offices.
Forms and fee
Prepare EX-17 and proof of payment of Modelo 790, código 012 for the applicable TIE card line. Check the current official fee and the line that matches your card before paying.
Bring
- Valid passport or travel document required for your case
- Completed EX-17
- Proof of payment of Modelo 790 código 012
- Your favorable resolution, visa or other evidence of the authorization/status supporting the TIE, as applicable
- Appointment confirmation
- Any photograph, address evidence or additional documents required by the Police office for your specific card type
What happens after
The Police complete the identification/card-issuance step and give you the instructions for collection or the next step. Follow the collection instructions from that office; the TIE reflects the validity of the underlying authorization.

After choosing TIE, first confirm that a visa, authorization, or favorable decision already exists. The TIE does not grant residence by itself; it documents permission that was already approved.

- Valid passport or EU national ID.
